FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
   November 25, 2014

ARLIS/NA Women and Art Special Interest Group coordinator Siān Evans recognized as one of Foreign Policy magazine's
 "100 Leading Global Thinkers"

The Art Libraries Society of North America congratulates Siān Evans, the coordinator of the ARLIS/NA Women and Art Special Interest Group, for recognition in Foreign Policy magazine's sixth annual "100 Leading Global Thinkers" issue along with five of her colleagues in the Art+Feminism group. The ARLIS/NA Women and Art SIG initiated Art+Feminism, which was recognized for the great progress made in multiple worldwide events to create and expand entries in Wikipedia by and about women, women in the arts, gender studies, and related issues. Art+Feminism was described by Foreign Policy as "correcting the gender gap" in Wikipedia. The "global thinkers" were announced on November 17th in Washington, D.C. in an address by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry at an event co-hosted by the U.S. Department of State and Foreign Policy magazine.

"We are thrilled that Foreign Policy has recognized the global influence of feminism and art in shaping and explaining our world, and the hundreds of past and future organizers and contributors with whom we share this honor," said Evans on behalf of the group of honorees which includes Dorothy Howard, Richard Knipel, Jacqueline Mabey, Michael Mandiberg, and Laurel Ptak. "In doing so, they are furthering our mission by highlighting the vital importance of female representation in all the arts, online, and in broader social discourse."
Art+Feminism hosted 30 satellite Wikipedia edit-a-thons in the past year, including 12 at libraries around the world, with hundreds of participants creating and editing entries on the site relating to art, feminism, gender studies, and LGBTQ issues. The ARLIS/NA special interest group promoted these events and was instrumental in getting participant involvement. Art+Feminism was also involved with two conference presentations this year: "Editing for Equality: The Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-Thons and the Politics and Practice of Partnering with Wikipedia" was presented as an ARLIS/NA webinar in April 2014; and at the ARLIS/NA annual conference in May, Ms. Evans presented "The Politics of Distributed Learning: Outcomes of the Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon 2014" with her Art+Feminism colleague Jacqueline Mabey on the New Voices panel. Ms. Evans also presented "Art+Feminism Edit-a-thons," at WikiConference USA in February 2014 in collaboration with Ms. Mabey and Michael Mandiberg.
Next year's Art+Feminism Wikipedia edit-a-thon will take place at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. The complete list of Foreign Policy's 100 Global Thinkers of 2014 can be found here: http://globalthinkers.foreignpolicy.com/.
