ARLIS/NA Artists’ Books Thesaurus

By Jaye Fishel, Esther Marie Jackson, Allison Jai O’Dell, Suzanne Rackover, and Heather Slania

22 July 2014

The ARLIS/NA Book Arts Special Interest Group (SIG) Artists’ Books Thesaurus Working Group would like to announce the release of the online demo of the ARLIS/NA Artists’ Books Thesaurus. The Artists’ Books Thesaurus will offer a much-needed vocabulary for indexing artists’ books and their features. The working draft and interface demo is available at: http://tinyurl.com/abthes.

This web-based delivery platform will offer an illustrated, user-friendly guide to exploring and finding vocabulary terms. While all terms will be illustrated, with multiple examples, we have only illustrated select terms to use as demonstrations. See “Kikko-toji,” “French door books,” or “Concertina bindings.”  Scope notes are currently available from A - “Pop-up books.”  Exports are available in SKOS, DC, MADS, Zthes, XTM, and VDEX formats.

The project was spearheaded at the Book Arts SIG meeting of the 2012 Art Libraries Society of North America (ARLIS/NA) Conference, “Colouring Outside the Lines,” March 29-April 2, 2012 in Toronto, Ontario. A working group of the Book Arts SIG has worked diligently for two years to create a comprehensive thesaurus specifically for use in cataloging and scholarship of artists’ books. Progress updates and calls for feedback were given at the 2013 and 2014 ARLIS/NA conferences.

The Working Group will be sending out calls for comments in the coming months once the draft is completed. The ARLIS/NA community and its extended family of libraries, archives, and museums will also be invited to contribute images and videos for illustrating the thesaurus.
