Afternoon:

I've long believed that one reason salaries in our field haven't improved
as they have in other traditionally female dominated professionals like
nursing and teaching (K-12) is that we still suffer from the attitude that
anyone with a little training can do the work of a librarian. Grudgingly
or not, it is recognized that you can't just drop anyone into the role of a
nurse or a K-12 teacher. Also in the the teaching profession, even though
some of the strength has been lessened over the last few years, you still
have fairly effective unions.

I work at a private college were salaries overall are generally going to be
lower that those that could be earned at public institutions. But even
though we're tenure-track faculty with professorial rank, we aren't
included with our classroom colleagues when salaries are reviewed and
compared within the ranks. Why? There are several reasons, some internal
(I suspect) and some external. Of the latter, you have the AAUP which
excludes librarians from its annual survey of faculty salaries, even if
librarians are full members of an institution's faculty. CUPA-HR has a
salary survey separate from faculty for librarians (librarians are included
in the "Academic Affairs" survey). So at least in higher education, even
if as a librarian you are a tenure-track faculty member, in many ways you
still aren't "really" faculty. This allows an institution, if it so
wishes, to treat librarians as faculty when it benefits the institution and
as administrative personnel when it benefits the institution.
