This Wednesday at 2:00 Eastern, the House Judiciary Committee has schedule a hearing that will we discussing Preservation and Reuse of Copyrighted Works .  You can watch live video streaming from on link on the hearing page, Permalink: http://judiciary.house.gov/index.cfm/2014/4/hearing-preservation-and-reuse-of-copyrighted-works.  The witness list was posted this afternoon:

Mr. Gregory Lukow , Chief, National Audio-Visual Conservation Center, The Library of Congress

Mr. Richard Rudick , Co-Chair Section 108 Study Group

Mr. James Neal , Vice President for Information Services and University Librarian, Columbia University

Ms. Jan Constantine , General Counsel, The Authors Guild

Mr. Michael C. Donaldson ,Partner Donaldson + Callif, LLP

Mr. Jeffrey Sedlik , President and Chief Executive Officer, PLUS Coalition

Of specific interest to ARLIS/NA members is not only the section 108 in general, but more specifically one of the witnesses is from the PLUS Coalition which has developed an image registry.     The 2008 orphan works bills were not passed due in part to the substantial out cry of media/commercial photographers.  The House version of the bill called for the implementation of an image registry and the bill would not apply to images until the registry was up and running.  Some also wanted compulsory licensing (like music).  PLUS is being presented as the solution and the Copyright Office most recent Notice of Inquiry specifically spoke about the PLUS registry. Until the written testimony is made available, If want to know more about what is likely to be discussed in this hearing, I suggest reading the Federal Register notice, http://www.copyright.gov/fedreg/2014/79fr7706.pdf and the comments posted on the Copyright Office website.
