A long shot, but could it be Variation, as in Variations on a Theme of Paganini by Rachmaninov, or Fantasia, as in Fantasia Concertante on a Theme of Corelli by Michael Tippett and Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis by Vaughan Wiilliams
All these pieces create new melodies based on melodies by other composers.
