Dear Colleagues;

As the capital of the United States of America, arranging tours and events for the Society has been a challenge with limitations on group size, day or time restrictions, transportation, and security arrangements foremost on the minds of our hosts. While we have offered an unprecedented number of free or low cost tours, the number of participants for each tour was a big hurdle. We hope you will understand these issues if you were unable to get on the tour of your choice.

Many companies offer tours of individual landmarks, embassies, notable neighborhoods, sites linked to political scandal, and historic homes. This is a partial list - I suggest using your sleuthing expertise to search online for additional tours, or consult the many published guides to Washington D.C. You may want to gather a few friends, go to dinner, and take a tour of the monuments by night, which you can do by foot, bus, trolley, Segway, or bicycle!

General Washington D.C. tours:

Old Town Trolley Tours is a hop-on, hop-off tour with more than 20 stops and 100 points of interest.

Washington DC family-friendly tours offer walking, biking, boating, and Segway tours through several other companies .

Old Town Trolley Tours offer a Monuments by Night tour! More information is available here: http://www.trolleytours.com/washington-dc/night-tours.asp
More tours by night are offered by Free Tours by Foot. These include the Monuments tour, Ghosts of Georgetown Tour, and others.

I am a big fan of viewing the monuments at night. The hordes of tourists have mostly departed and most of the monuments are fairly quiet. My favorites spots are - viewing the city from across the Tidal Basin at the Jefferson Memorial and walking through the outdoor rooms of the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial that is close by. Using a taxi app in your Smartphone like Uber or Hailo will make getting back to the hotel easy.

Best regards,

Gregory Most
