Dear ARLIS/NA Colleagues,
The deadline for proposals-March 1st-is just around the corner for this collaborative session at the IFLA World Congress! I hope many of you will throw your hats in the ring, especially as there is the possibility of receiving a Kress Travel Award<http://www.arlisna.org/about/awards/awards_index.html> to offset your expenses. Call or email me if you have questions about the theme, the suitability of a topic, etc. With all the creative work going on in North America, there should be a great showing from the ARLIS membership!
All the best,
Sandy Brooke

Call for Papers: SCIENCE+ART=CREATIVITYN : Libraries and the New Collaborative Thinking
In this age of trans-disciplinary research, traditional scientific and humanistic discourses are undergoing a transformation. New modes of inquiry are capitalizing on the strengths that each set of disciplines brings to the table. Promoting creative synergies between the arts and sciences is the motivation for "STEM to STEAM" initiatives in many countries. Advocates contend that the STEM disciplines-science, technology, engineering, and mathematics-are empowered when coupled with the arts-that "STEM expands into STEAM" when art is brought into the mix. On the other side of the equation, artists, curators and designers are witnessing the revolutionary impact of scientific and technological thinking on their modes of practice.
At the 2014 IFLA World Library and Information Congress in Lyon, France, the Science and Technology Libraries and the Art Libraries Sections of IFLA are co-sponsoring a session on this theme. We are seeking speakers who will highlight collaborations between artists and scientists as well as the library collections and services that support the intersection of these two spheres.
Subjects of interest include but are not limited to:
*         Experimental data visualization
* Molecular imaging and molecular aesthetics
* Robotics and algorithmically generated art
* Game design for scientific or artistic education
* Aesthetic design interventions to meet environmental, social, and economic challenges
* Regional, national, or institutional STEM to STEAM-type initiatives
* Innovative library collections, services, and programs that support art and science collaborations
The deadline for proposals is March 1, 2014.
