Hi all,

We frequently use the Dictionary of Japanese Artists, which is really good for 19th century and earlier. ISBN 0-8348-0235-X.
If you come upon other resources, please keep me in the loop too!

Best,
Amanda

Thank you, Amy and Joy.

I use the LC name authority files regularly, but they are a little light on Korean (and many other non-Western names), especially if they have not appeared with some regularity in English-language materials. I will look into the other resources, much appreciated!

Hi Janice,

Joy Kim, USC’s Korean Heritage Librarian, provided this information.  I hope it helps.

Amy,

The best authority file for Korean names (or any other nationals including Japanese and Vietnamese) is the Library of Congress Name Authority File: http://authorities.loc.gov/

Also, the following database may be of interest:
(source: Handbook for Asian Studies specialists : a guide to research materials and collection building tools.  Noriko Asato, editor.  Santa Barbara: Libraries Unlimited, 2013.)

Korean biographical archive. de Gruyter Verlag, comp. München: K.G.Saur, 2000-[2005?]

db.saur.de/WBIS/basicSearch.jsf

(One-time purchase or Subscription) This is a part of the World Biographical Information System Online (WBIS Online), “the most comprehensive biographical database available.” Based on the digitization of K. G. Saur’s Biographical Archives, it compiles biographical articles from printed reference works published from the 16th to the 21st centuries, and reproduces ca. 110,000 biographical entries from ca. 125 source works encompassing more than 270 volumes published until 2000. The sources also include biographical material from scientific journals and yearbooks. Texts in English, French, German, Korean, and Russian; for ca. 20,000 entries, English summaries are provided along with the original Korean text. Names are searchable by McCune-Reischauer Romanization, and the images of the original source document are provided.  Best for historic persons.  See also World Biographical Information System Online (WBIS Online)

For other Asian biographical sources, I suggest consulting the following reference book (disclosure: I am a contributor)

Handbook for Asian Studies specialists : a guide to research materials and collection building tools.  Noriko Asato, editor.  Santa Barbara: Libraries Unlimited, 2013.

Let me know if you need further assistance.

Does anyone know of a list of Romanized Asian personal name authorities other than HKCAN? I’m particularly interested in one for Korean names, but it would be nice to have any references to Japanese and Vietnamese lists as well.

Thanks,
