Colleagues,

I am forwarding an interesting question from a friend in a non-art library, which I hope some of you might address:

I'm trying to plan a spring event for LIBRAS collection management special interest group that focuses on art in the library. However, this a group of academic librarians who do not work in art libraries. What I'm really interested in is how to curate, exhibit, maintain, and store a library art collection when no one on staff has a background in art (and when the library is not already equipped to deal with art and exhibitions). This is something we're trying to do at my library now and, although I have a background in art and exhibitions, I have never selected/purchased hardware for hanging displays, or written an acquisition policy for art, or contacted local framing companies to ask them to donate their services. These are all challenges my colleagues and I are facing as we lay the foundation for our own art collection. I would like to explore these types of challenges in a talk, webinar, or workshop with my fellow LIBRAS librarians.

So, my question is this: do you know anyone who can speak to these challenges and give academic librarians some guidance or inspiration about how to manage art collections in small university libraries? I would really appreciate any thoughts you have on the matter. I hope to host this event in May, and there may be some money available for a small honorarium.
