Dear ARLISians,

Casting this out to the collective wisdom: do you have suggestions for image sources that I may be overlooking?   A student is trying to locate an image of a fragment that is described in the National Archaeological Museum Collection of Sculpture published in Athens, 1968. The inventory (#3775) description reads:

Small head of a youth facing right, from a relief.  Possibly from a three-figure relief (with a representation of Orpheus and Eurydice?).  It is a copy of the first century A. D.  Found in the excavations of the ancient Academy in 1933.  Height 0.16 m.

The student has covered a lot of ground already—searching later catalogues of the museum’s sculpture collection, LIMC, and more—see her message below.  We haven’t yet looked through the excavation reports from the Academy, but that is my next step.

Many thanks in advance for any ideas.  Art librarianship is a new area for me and I am so very grateful for this group!

Emily

I have been having trouble finding an image for a fragment portraying Orpheus' head. It is believed that the head belongs to a Three-Figure Relief. It is in the National Archeological Museum of Athens, Greece and its inventory number is 3775. At least in 1968, the fragment was displayed in the Poseidon Room.

I have checked ARTstor, the Census Database, the Arachne Database, LIMC under Orpheus and Eurydice, and a catalogue of the museum's sculptures published in 2002 as well as a website for the museum. I feel like I'm running out of tricks.

I attached a pdf - on page 45 is the entry for the fragment. I went to J. Travlos' Pictorial Dictionary of Ancient Athens and started to track the articles published in 1933-4 to see if there is a mention of the fragment or photo, but I have come up with noting. I have another source - A. Caruso's Akademia - that provides even more sources for the excavations of the Academy during 1933-4 that might help.
