Visual Resources Association Foundation Announces 2013-2014
Internship Award Recipient
The Visual Resources Association Foundation Board of Directors
announces the 2013-2014 VRAF Internship Award in visual resources and image
management. This award was generously funded by the Samuel H. Kress Foundation.
Angie Yip, of Chatham, Ontario, Canada, is the winner of the VRA
Foundation’s first Internship Award. She will receive $3,000 to work a minimum
of 200 hours in the Visual Resources Department at the College of Creative
Studies in Detroit, Michigan. The proposed project involves collaborating with
the Detroit Institute of Art and Wayne State University to catalog and make
accessible several thousand images to facilitate teaching and learning.
Digitizing and describing CCS’ permanent art collection will also be part of
this project. Angie’s stated goal is to “enhance the accessibility and quality
of visual collections, especially through image databases, repositories, and
digital libraries.” In addition to contributing to Angie’s professional growth,
the VRAF Internship Award provides funding for a project that would otherwise
be delayed or not implemented due to limited staff resources and budget
challenges.
The Internship Award Committee received a number of excellent
applications from qualified emerging information professionals. Evaluation criteria
were developed and references received to assist with the determination of the
recipient. Angie has the scholastic credentials, currently working on a
graduate certificate in information management and having recently completed an
MLIS from Wayne State University. She is interning at the College for Creative
Studies and has worked as a research assistant at Wayne State, where she
obtained experience digitizing newspapers for a Fedora project. She has a
Bachelors degree in Art History with a Minor in Studio Art from the University
of Guelph and completed a post-graduate certificate in museum management and
curatorship from Fleming College, both located in the province of Ontario in
Canada. Angie has interesting intern/work experience in museums (Art Gallery of
Ontario, Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Museum of Inuit Art in Toronto, and the
Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit) and also for
an architectural firm (Lundholm Associates Architects in Toronto). She wants to
now focus on visual resources and image management. The exciting collaboration
between three well-respected Detroit institutions, the ambitious goal of
cataloging and making accessible several thousand images, and the potential of
this project to expand Angie’s skill sets and enable her to become actively
involved in the field of visual resources were persuasive factors in her
selection.
The VRA Foundation is excited to support the education and practical
training of emerging information professionals through the implementation of
this new internship award. We are grateful to the Kress Foundation for its
assistance and for recognizing the potential of this award to foster the next
generation of visual resource professionals. Thanks also to Margaret Webster,
Meghan Musolff, and Maureen Burns for serving on the Internship Awards
Committee.
The VRAF Internship Award is part of the Foundation's mission to
advance awareness of critical issues for effective digital information
management (including intellectual property and copyright); to encourage the
application of professional standards, innovative technology, and metadata
cataloging protocols; and to facilitate workplace training. The VRA Foundation
supports a range of educational offerings to help ensure that such information
reaches a diverse, global audience. For more information about the Visual
