Director of the Library

 

In continuous operation since its founding in 1916, the New York School of Interior Design (NYSID) is ranked among the top design schools in the United States, and is an accredited, independent institution of higher education in New York devoted entirely to the discipline of interior design and its related professions.  Located on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, NYSID currently enrolls over 700 students studying in one of nine undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as on a non-matriculated and continuing education basis, and taught by a dedicated faculty of practicing designers, architects, visual artists, art and design historians, and scholars from a variety of academic disciplines. 

 

NYSID seeks a dynamic, collegial, service-oriented Director of the Library to work in collaboration with library staff to provide leadership in collection development, service enhancement, reference assistance, maintaining and expanding visual and digital resources, and bibliographic instruction. The Director of the Library oversees the NYSID Interior Design Archives, a materials collection, a satellite location at the NYSID Graduate Center, and the Friends of the Library group. The Director of the Library also coordinates agreements for cooperative library services with New York University, and other Metro New York institutions, and chairs the college’s library committee.

 

Reporting to the Vice President for Academic Affairs/Dean of the College, the Director is an important member of the Office of Academic Affairs team, and is responsible for budget planning and management. The Director must demonstrate a thorough understanding of electronic databases and digital media.  This is a 12-month position and will require some evening and weekend hours.


REQUIRED: MLS from an ALS accredited program, the ability to work flexibly and creatively in a changing environment, mastery of innovative librarianship, and a strong student service philosophy, as well as, reference and library instruction experience and a background or undergraduate degree in design, art or design history, architecture, or fine arts.

 

A candidate must know how to manage vendor licenses for online databases; understand copyright issues as they pertain to teaching and learning; have strength in reference and instruction for design disciplines; and understand recent trends in libraries in regards to e-publishing. It is preferable that the candidate have experience working with an outside ILS, and experience with Ex Libris products, such as Aleph and Primo.  

 

PREFERRED: A second subject master’s degree in art, architecture, or design, design technology, or a related field.
