New Initiatives in Independent Media Preservation On December 5th, at NYU’s Fales Library and Special Collections, Independent Media Arts Preservation (IMAP) will present a program of new initiatives that have the potential to make preservation of audiovisual media more accessible to artists, activists, independent creators, and non-profit organizations. Since its founding in 1989, IMAP has supported the creators and caretakers of independently produced electronic media. In recent years, new digital technologies, crowd-sourced projects, and the rise of a ‘maker’ culture have led to exciting developments with the potential to democratize the preservation of audiovisual material in unprecedented ways. We hope that this informal event will provoke discussion, debate, and new conversations among the many people concerned with the survival of independent media. The program: * John Passmore: WNYC's CD-R conservation project * Rebecca Fraimow and Kristin Macdonough: XFR STN: An Open-door Artist-centered Media Archiving Project * Matthew Epler: Redesigning Film Scanning from Scratch * Melitte Buchman and Jeff Martin: The Magnetic Media Crisis Committee’s VHS Digitization Projec The program will also include a screening of newly preserved video material from Fales Library’s Downtown Arts collection, which focuses on the culture of downtown New York City from the 1970s through the 1990s. A reception will follow.
