Subject: Re: [ARLIS-L] e-only Catalogues Raisonnes

As a publisher of digital-born catalogues raisonnés, I’ve followed this conversation with great interest.

I want to be sure that you are all aware that we are also offering a resource for digital catalogues raisonnés. Artifex Press has both software and publishing programs. We are producing catalogues in-house and we are also licensing our software for outside use by museums, galleries, artist studios, estates, and archives. Our first two published digital catalogues raisonnés — Chuck Close: Paintings and Jim Dine: Sculpture — are available for free at artifexpress.com<http://artifexpress.com>.

The question of how to catalogue such publications is a fascinating one and has been something we’ve wanted to address as well. We would welcome your input as to how a publisher like Artifex Press can help to make your cataloguing easier. Please feel free to contact me with suggestions at [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>.

I think it's also worth mentioning the Getty Online Scholarly Catalog initiative, which deals more with collection or exhibition catalogs, but still may be relevant: http://www.getty.edu/foundation/initiatives/current/osci/index.html

Getty grants funded SFMOMA's Rauschenberg Research Project<http://www.sfmoma.org/explore/collection/project/rauschenberg_research_project>, which has a user guide for forming citations<http://www.sfmoma.org/explore/collection/project/rauschenberg_research_project/user_guide>, at least.

That doesn't help with questions of collecting or cataloging, but perhaps indicates that the URLs and content are going to be stable enough for users to take seriously.

Hello,

I would agree that the Frick is a good place to contact. Also, the Catalogues Raisonnes Scholar's Association has started to tackle this issue. They come from the researcher's perspective as opposed to the Librarian's, however a couple years ago they hosted a "mini-conference" on electronic catalogues raisonnes featuring some library and publishing representatives. The program for that event is available online and it may be worth reaching out to some of the speakers or the association: http://www.catalogueraisonne.org/CRSAminicon2011program.pdf

Online CRs that are deemed authoritative (which is itself difficult to determine unless the artist or artist's estate is directly involved) often have to be dealt with on a case by case basis as there is no one-size-fits all format or delivery method. Many are websites or online databases, sometimes with login credentials required, which obviously presents challenges when cataloging for library access.

Long story short, without standardized procedures for the creation, maintenance, and cataloging of these resources, it's tricky...

Exclusively online catalogues raisonnés are, in my opinion, huge
lawsuits waiting to happen.

For prints, maybe; for drawings or paintings, forget it.

Unlike bibliographies, catalogues raisonnés are not merely convenient
repositories of information: including a work in a catalogue raisonné
unequivocally declares it to be authentic.

I realize that many works featured in traditional (i.e., printed)
catalogues raisonnés have, over the years, been shown to be fakes--people
will always be human, after all. And in those cases the reputation of the
compiler (and thus of his/her scholarship) is diminished. So there is a
clear incentive to get it right the first time.

What do you think will happen when a rich Wall Streeter buys a $5
million painting, relying on a catalogue raisonné entry on the Podunk
University website--and then three years later finds that the entry has been
deleted?

I don't know the answer to this question, but I sure wouldn't want to be
one of Podunk U.'s lawyers.
