Amy,
If you can acquire all 20 volumes of the LIMC for $6,000 that would be a bargain.   When we set up a standing order for the Lexikon in the early 1980s, I believe the volumes were about $700 each.   In 1995, we paid $1,406 for v. 7 pt.1 & 2.  This is a monumental, scholarly work.  So maybe the $14,067 quoted by Chuck is not so outrageous for an entire set.   Many asking prices for books on abebooks, amazon, addall are outrageously skewed by unethical dealers, but there are reputable dealers who belong to antiquarian book dealers associations which have ethical business practice standards.   Perhaps the set @ $6,000 belonged to a retired classics or art history professor who needs to downsize his/her library.

Yes LIMC is an essential reference, even if unconscionably costly. I might point out the bizarre circumstance of a set of LIMC topping the AbeBooks list of Top 10 Most Expensive Sales in September 2011, fetching $14,067...

LIMC is not only useful for upper level work.  I regularly show it to undergradate classes and students for the plate volumes alone.  The foreign language essays can intimidate but the images volumes are easy to use: arranged by person then by type (busts, single, group, narratives, etc.) in rough chronological order..

Hi Amy,

The Amazon set for $6,600 sounds like the right price.  LIMC is hard to
find and is essential for anyone doing iconography in a Humanities
discipline, but particularly in Greco-Roman art and Renaissance art.  It
contains not only the authoritative entries on figures in Greco-Roman
mythology/religion but also a wealth of images not collated elsewhere.

An online version of the French articles is emerging under LIMC, but to my
knowledge is nowhere near complete.  There are entries in English, German,
Italian, and Greek(?).  Our volumes are threadbare from use..  Volumes of
its sister set Thescra are still being published.  LIMC covers persons;
Thescra covers subjects.
