I am pleased to announce that a day-long RDA workshop focusing on art research materials will be offered at the METRO (http://metro.org/) offices in NYC on Monday, December 9. A description of this workshop can be found below.

METRO is still working on the details and anticipates online registration to open in mid-October. The cost is expected to be in the $75-$100 range for METRO members and it will be slightly higher for non-members. We have capacity for 40 registrants. I will distribute registration details to this list as soon as they are available. For those unable to make the workshop, slides with additional commentary will be made available following the session.

I hope to see you there!

Best,
Lily

Description: This workshop will focus on providing description and access to art research materials – formats will include monographs (auction catalogs, exhibition catalogs, and artists’ books), archival materials (including artist files), and graphic materials. The workshop will include two 3-hour sessions, one on resource description and entity relationships, and an afternoon work session where participants are encouraged to discuss the materials covered in the morning session as well as address specific cataloging decision/workflow issues connected with the implementation of RDA.

The workshop will address only issues specific to art cataloging and will not provide general instruction for using RDA. Topics to be covered include:

- how to determine the access point formerly known as main entry;
- how to describe multiple physical characteristics using the new MARC fields implemented for RDA;
- what are relationship designators and when to use them;
- what's new and different in the authority file -- headings for exhibitions, works of art, personal and corporate names.

Instructors: Penny Baker, Collections Management Librarian at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute Library, and Anne Champagne, Head of Technical Services at the Ryerson & Burnham Libraries, Art Institute of Chicago.
