Academic Non-Affiliation and Its Challenges: A Manual for Adjuncts and
Independent Scholars in the Humanities

Fulltime tenure-track positions at colleges and universities have diminished
considerably in the past few decades and these educational institutions are
now employing a large number of adjuncts to teach courses. Work conditions
for these individuals are in most cases anything but optimal. Salaries are
low and benefits and job security are for the most part non-existent. Due to
familial or other professional obligations some individuals might choose to
become independent scholars, which also has its challenges, such as limited
access to scholarly libraries and other research facilities. Also, there are
underlying prejudices that result from non-affiliation that can slow or
impede career advancement, especially in the publication and conference
arenas. Zephyrus Scholarly Publications LLC is seeking submissions for an
upcoming anthology on the topic of adjuncting and independent scholarship in
the humanities field. We are particularly interested in personal accounts
about overcoming obstacles and achieving success in academia as a
non-affiliated scholar. These accounts should highlight specific strategies
for getting around the barriers adjuncts and independent scholars often face
when teaching, conducting research, participating at conferences, and
publishing. The anthology is not intended to serve as a complaint platform,
but rather as a source of practical information to be used by adjuncts and
independent scholars to better navigate the world of academia and overcome
the challenges that might impede the achievement of a successful career.
Submissions should be sent to the editor, Lilian H. Zirpolo
([log in to unmask]), via email by November 1st, 2013 and should
include a cover letter, 300 word abstract, and CV.
