The August issue of Scientific American has a special report on "Learning in the Digital Age" (pp. 48-73).

There are explanatory sections entitled:
• Big Data Goes to School
• MOOCs: Hype and Hope
• Adaptive Technology: Machine Learning
• The Future of Testing: Why We Need High-Speed Schools

There are short essays on specific topics by various authors:
• How thousands of online students can get the effect of one-on-one tutoring
• Technology can humanize the classroom
• Online courses may help alleviate faculty shortages and improve education
• The future of on-campus learning lies in the right combination of digital and traditional tools
• Technology can inspire creativity or dehumanize learning
• What the world's most addictive video game will teach us next

There is also an essay on the results from a student poll.

I found the report very helpful in providing a state-of-the field overview of current developments in education and the use of technology.
