Both awards offer an exciting opportunity to undertake high quality historical research leading to a PhD with a leading university in the UK, combined with an exceptional opportunity to gain practical museum work experience within one of the world's foremost art galleries. Patronage, Acquisition and Display: Contextualising the Art Collections of Longford Castle during the Long Eighteenth Century Birkbeck College, University of London (School of Arts)/The National Gallery, London This AHRC-funded PhD studentship will research the collecting and patronage of the Radnor family at Longford Castle during the long eighteenth century, drawing on both the collection itself and previously untapped archival material, largely housed at the Wiltshire and Swindon Record Office. The National Gallery enjoys a unique relationship with Longford Castle, which has made full access to these resources newly possible. This project will make a significant contribution to the history of taste, collecting and the country house in the long eighteenth century. Sir Philip Hendy (1900-1980) director and scholar in Leeds and London 1934-1967: the acquisition and display of art and curatorial practices in ages of austerity University of Leeds/The National Gallery, London This AHRC-funded PhD studentship will research the curatorial practices of Sir Philip Hendy (1900-1980), Director of The National Gallery (1946-67) after holding the Directorship of Leeds Museums & Galleries (1934-46). An investigation of Hendy as museum-director is an opportunity for an enhanced understanding of the history of two key institutions and their role in the public display and interpretation of artworks as well as an assessment of the changing relationships between regional and national art museums. The focus on Hendy will provide an important case study for the history of curatorship and its political, social and cultural contexts, further illuminating the significance of the changing methods and practices of museum curatorship in times of economic, political and social crisis. This post offers a nine months part-time (or six months full-time) job at the National Gallery, with periods at the University of York, to assist with the development of a major grant application for a collaborative research project on the visual culture of the British country house. The post-holder will be expected to undertake a focused pilot study of British country house inventories and to help convene roundtable discussions with relevant specialists to identify strategic priorities for the future study of the British country house.
