The Board of Directors of the Visual
Resources Association Foundation is pleased to announce that it is the
recipient of a Samuel H. Kress Foundation grant to develop an
internship program in visual resources and image management. This
award will support a one-year pilot internship while the VRAF develops
the program and secures funding to ensure its sustainability.
The VRAF and the Visual Resources Association are grateful to the
Kress Foundation for its support and for recognizing the potential of
this award to foster the next generation of visual resource
professionals. The Kress grant programs (http://www.kressfoundation.org/grants/main/) support scholarly projects that promote the
appreciation, interpretation, preservation, study and teaching of
European art from antiquity to the early 19th century.
The VRA Foundation has formed an Internship Award Committee to
implement the new award. Meghan Musolff from the VRA Education
Committee, Margaret Webster, from the VRA Awards Committee, and
Maureen Burns, a VRA Foundation Board Director have agreed to serve on
the committee, with Burns serving as Chair.
During the 2013-2014 academic year the Committee will award $3,000 to
a graduate student interested in learning about the field of visual
resources and image management. The student will provide 200 hours of
service to a visual resources collection at an appropriate host
institution. Eligible students will have completed at least 10 credits
of coursework in Library/Information Science, Art History,
Architecture or Architectural History, Visual or Studio Art, Museum
Studies, or other applicable fields of study.
The Internship Award Committee will begin compiling a list of
potential host institutions from academic institutions, libraries,
museums, or other appropriate professional contexts. A call for
institutions that are interested in hosting a visual resources intern
will be distributed soon with detailed application information for
internship applicants to be released shortly thereafter.
The VRA Education Committee and the VRA/VRAF Boards have discussed the
creation of an internship program since 2006, and it is through the
generosity of the Kress Foundation and the hard work of many
individuals that this idea is brought to fruition. The VRA Foundation
Board acknowledges and expresses its appreciation to the following
people for their persistent efforts to develop the program: Maureen
Burns, Sarah Carter, Sarah Christensen, Erika Church, Carolyn
Lucarelli, Meghan Musolff, Julia Simic, Rina Vecchiola, Betha Whitlow,
and Beth Wodnick.
The VRA Foundation is excited to be able to
support the education and practical training of emerging information
professionals through the implementation of this new internship award.
