The City of Carlsbad, Calif., is a scenic coastal community of 106,000 residents located 35 miles north of the City of San Diego and 25 miles south of Orange County.  The City of Carlsbad is known for its strong leadership and fiscal discipline as well as successfully balancing tourism, employment, light industry, the environment and a high standard of living.

·         Since 1986, the City of Carlsbad’s Cultural Arts Office has fostered the awareness, appreciation and expression of the arts among the diverse audiences in the city. Offering a broad range of programs and services, the Cultural Arts Office strives to make the arts an integral and inspiring part of the community’s life.

·         The Cultural Arts Office presents programs in the performing arts to complement and expand the offerings in music, theater and dance by other local organizations. 

·         Summer in Carlsbad means TGIF Jazz in the Parks – a tradition that has truly become an integral part of the community’s life. Presented by the City of Carlsbad’s Cultural Arts Office, the concert series began in 1986. Back then, four concerts were held, with about 150 people at each. Nowadays… well, let’s just say there are a few more folks out there enjoying each performance!

·         National quality with a regional focus. Variety and balance. Introduction of new work to the area. Engaging new audiences… These are just some of the primary goals of the changing exhibition program that have made the William D. Cannon Art Gallery a dynamic center for the visual arts in San Diego’s North County. Through museum-quality exhibitions, hands-on family activities, acclaimed arts education programs, lectures and publications, the Gallery strives to make the visual arts an accessible, integral and ongoing part of the community’s life.

·         Strong arts nonprofits in the community serve as partners with the Cultural Arts Office. Examples include New Village Arts Theatre, now in its eleventh season of producing plays, and one the most critically acclaimed theatres in North County San Diego as well as the Museum of Making Music, which provides opportunities for cultural enrichment while preserving our musical heritage through exhibitions, concerts and educational programs aimed toward a wide range of audiences.

The Department

The Library and Cultural Arts Department provides educational, informational, and cultural arts services for all community residents, which contributes to qualify of life by supporting lifelong learning, the pursuit of knowledge, and creating community gathering places. The Library & Cultural Arts Department operates three public facilities that include the Carlsbad City Library, the Georgina Cole Library and the Library Learning Center, along with supporting public art throughout the community.  The Carlsbad City Library is also home to the Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium and the Cannon Art Gallery which both support a variety of visual arts, performing arts, and art education programming and services.

The Position

The Cultural Arts Manager will be a big picture thinker, an articulate communicator and have a passion for the arts.  The successful candidate will have the ability to listen to the community and assess what they are truly interested in.  The new Cultural Arts Manager will combine essential business skills and new creative funding sources to deliver on new and better programs and offerings.  The ideal candidate will plan, lead, supervise and monitor activities in a way that supports the city in its  mission to become a “world class” city.

 

The Cultural Arts Manager reports to the Library & Cultural Arts Director, and will develop, enhance and administer a broad cultural arts program.  The position supervises a variety of positions including full-time, part-time and volunteer support staff. In addition to managing the cultural arts program, the position coordinates various projects among Commissions, artists, staff, and art organizations; serves as liaison between the Carlsbad Library & Arts Foundation, the Friends of the Arts; makes presentations before City Council, Commissions and community organizations; attends events outside of normal working hours; develops and monitors program budgets; gathers resources through fund raising and grant writing activities, and performs other related tasks. 

 

·         Challenges will include tapping into an important network of partnerships and leveraging their strengths; evaluating the various programs offered in the organization and in the community and equating them as a whole to the community.
