Nineteenth and early 20th century photographers.
Hi everyone!
Any ideas? I am currently compiling profiles of artists whose work is discussed or illustrated in our digitizations of The Studio (1893-1922) and International Studio (1897-1921). These contain several examples of work by contemporary photographers. Can anyone suggest a good source of biographical information on nineteenth and early 20th century photographers, particularly minor ‘salon’ photographers?
We have a pretty good reference library, however, it is rather weak when it comes to photography. Printed sources we have in our library include:
Browne, Turner and Partnow, Elaine. Macmillan biographical cyclopedia of photographic artists & innovators. (New York, NY: Macmillan Publishing Company, 1982)
The Oxford Companion to the Photograph. Edited by Robert Lenman. (London: Oxford University Press, 2005)
These tend to focus on well documented photographers rather than the lesser known figures.
I’ve come across one site: Watch the Birdie – Blog. The World of the Victorian Photographer: http://qvictoria.wordpress.com/victorian-photographers-ad-av/ however, this contains little biographical information and misses out many names
I would be very grateful for suggestions as to printed sources we could acquire or other online sources we could consult.
