Los Angeles, CA May 15, 2013

Otis College of Art and Design will offer its first massive online open course (MOOC) in Art History, entitled "The Modern Genius: Art and Culture in the 19th Century," starting June 17, 2013.

"The Modern Genius" focuses on key issues surrounding the making, viewing, and interpretation of art in the late 19th century, when radical artists subverted tradition and permanently changed not only visual culture but society itself. Beyond style, technique, and fine art, the course will engage participants in the critical issues of modernity from Realism through Post-Impressionism, and address the larger world of visual culture that made this period so fascinating and complex. Participants will have an opportunity to explore a revolutionary moment in time when the very concept of art was in flux and conventional ideas in art-making were challenged, and to understand how that tumult of genius and modernity continues to influence us today.

"Otis is thrilled to offer such an important course free to the public and taught by a brilliant, dynamic professor," said Otis Provost Kerry Walk. "As an educational institution, Otis strives to enrich the world by sharing knowledge with the community beyond our campus. Anyone interested in such 'modern geniuses' as Monet, van Gogh, and Picasso, and their impact on contemporary life and art, will find this course exhilarating."

The Otis MOOC is being offered through canvas.net and is free to the public. Go to: http://www.canvas.net<https://www.canvas.net/courses/the-modern-genius-art-and-culture-in-the-19th-century> to sign up!

START DATE: June 17th, 2013

COURSE TITLE: The Modern Genius

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This Art History course investigates the role of the French avant-garde in developing and showcasing new modern forms and approaches to art and visual culture in the 19th century. It addresses the most critical issues of modernity from Realism through Post-Impressionism as they relate to the stylistic changes that challenged academic art, the new subjects that confounded modern audiences, and the new roles and authority of the modern artist.

Through a series of video podcasts and online readings over five weeks, participants will understand the issues of modernity and the way that art and art-making addressed these issues, and recognize the profound impact that 19th-century Europe had in shaping our contemporary ideas of the "modern."
