Re: [ARLIS-L] article request - Industrial Design

Hi Gabrielle

We have this issue.  Let me know if you would like me to send you a scan.

We have written abstracts of all the articles in Industrial Design since vol. 1, 1954 for the designinform database Design Abstracts Retrospective.  We have also compiled a profile of Hannon for the designinform database Design ProFILES:

Hannon, William (Bill) J., Jr. [1934-. USA. Industrial Designer]

William J. Hannon, Jr. [also known as William J. Hannon] was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on 11 November 1934 and studied at Massachusetts College of Art (BFA, 1956), the Boston Architectural Center (1957-58), the University of Massachusetts, Boston (MS, 1982), and at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst (doctoral research, from 1985). After service in the U.S. Army (1956-57), Hannon worked as an industrial designer for Morton Hollis Associates in Boston (1957-58). In 1958 he joined the medical equipment manufacturer MacBick in Cambridge, Massachusetts, as a designer, and soon became director of the company's new design department.  During his time with MacBick he designed everything from their graphics to their products and packaging.  His work for MacBick was the subject of an article by Maude Dorr in 'Industrial Design' vol.9, no.8, August 1962 (pp.58-63). Hannon left McBick in 1963 and until 1965 was senior account designer with Williams Associates in Lynfield, Massachusetts, for whom he designed a symbol for Information International, Inc. and a washbasin unit for Market Forge Co. He was then president and chief executive officer with Corporate Design Consultants in Boston until 1971. From 1985 to 1995 he was partner in Keohan & Hannon Associates in Milton, Massachusetts. He was then principal of HannonDesign, which had offices in Cohasset, Massachusetts and New London, New Hampshire. Clients for whom Hannon has worked have included Polaroid, Grace Lines, Raytheon, Boston Scientific, Sheraton Hotels, Beckton Dickenson, Nartech Medical Group, S.A.Y. Industries, Franlin Industries, Borowco Associates Architects, Polyfiltronics Inc., Parker Brothers, Curtis Farms Supermarkets, Mansfield Scientific, U.S. Plywood, and Abbott Laboratories.  From 1971 onwards Hannon taught at Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, where he is now [2009] Professor Emeritus of Industrial Design. He has also taught at the Sawyer School of Management at Suffolk University in Boston and has lectured at Harvard University, Rhode Island School of Design, Wentworth Institute, The Boston Architectural Center, The London Business School, Executive Training Center in Ljubljana, Slovenia, The Design Center in Toyama, Japan, The Design Museum in London, The Harrow Business School, London,  Les Atelier in Paris, The European Academy of Design in Stockholm, Art Center College of Design, University College in Cork, School of Design, North Carolina State University, and Georgia Institute of Technology. He was a founding member and Chair of the Boston Chapter of the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) and founder of the Design Management Institute (DMI). In 1990 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA) in London DESIGN RESEARCH PUBLICATIONS ©.

Incidentally, we have a complete run of Industrial Design from 1954 to the late 1980s.

All the best

Chris

Collective Wisdom,

Does anyone have a run of Industrial Design that goes to the early 1960's?
I am looking for:

Dorr, Maude MacBick.     Industrial Design <http://www.designinform.co.uk/database/publication.php?publication=Industrial%20Design>  vol.9, no.8 (Aug.1962) pp.58-63 illus.  A detailed report on the work of Bill Hannon as Design Director of the medical equipment company MacBick. Since his appointment by the firm in 1958 Hannon has designed everything from their graphics to their products and packaging [17 illustrations]

I would love a scan if possible.

Best,
