The ARLIS/NA Cataloging Advisory Committee will hold its annual business meeting on Saturday, April 27, 2013, from 8 am to 9 am in Conference Center 204.

All interested ARLIS members are invited to attend.

The agenda will focus on the use of conventional collective titles (CCTs) as access points in records for resources that include reproductions of artists’ works. The meeting is intended to be a continuation of the virtual meeting CAC members and friends held on January 18, 2013.

Brief summary of the topic:

The ARLIS cataloging community is concerned about the proliferation of CCTs in RDA bibliographic and authority records for artist monographs. These access points take the form:

[Artist’s name]. Works. Selections

They are used when a monograph contains reproductions of an artist’s works.

Issues raised fall into two general categories:

Practical concerns: Almost all art books include reproductions, therefore these access points are somewhat meaningless, and merely clutter the catalog. Routine addition of these access points to bibliographic records, together with the creation of the corresponding authority records, presents a burden for the art cataloging community. Moreover, the lack of guidance leads to erroneous access points, for example:

Parker, John, 1798-1860. Postcards. Selections (for a book including reproductions of postcards reproducing watercolor paintings by John Parker)

Theoretical concerns: A reproduction of an art work in a monograph is not the same as the original art work. If it is desirable to bring out the presence of reproductions of an artist’s work within a resource, the CCT for the artist’s works needs to be formulated in a way that indicates that the “works” in the resource are reproduced. The current CCTs do not do this. As we move beyond the confines of the bibliographic universe into an environment where our records need to co-exist with records for art objects, it will become necessary to be able to distinguish between originals and reproductions.

Based on the January virtual meeting, CAC intends to work towards composing a request for a revision of the Library of Congress Policy Statement for RDA 25.1, to add "artist monographs" or "exhibition catalogs" or "art catalogs" to the list of exclusions to the rule in this section instructing catalogers to add a conventional collective title for related works in compilations. Depending on the discussion at this meeting, the Committee may decide to take further steps.

Background information on the CAC discussion and RDA documentation was listed in Dan Lipcan’s message on ARLIS-L on February 5, 2013.

All are welcome to bring arguments for and against using CCTs as access points in records for resources that include reproductions of artists’ works.
