ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives Tour

                     Monday April 29, 2013 9:00 am - 5:30pm

Departing from the Sheraton Hotel by bus, we begin our day at ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives, “the oldest active Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning (LGBTQ) organization in the United States and the largest repository of LGBTQ materials in the world. Outfest and the UCLA Film & Television Archive partnered in 2005 to create the Outfest Legacy Project for LGBT Film Preservation.  The only program of its kind in the world, the Outfest Legacy Project is aimed at the growing crisis in lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) moving image archiving.  Many of the landmark LGBT films produced over the last 30 years are already in danger of fading away, their original exhibition prints in tatters, their negatives in woeful storage conditions…or even lost.”

The Clark Library

Next stop is The William Andrews Clark Memorial Library is one of UCLA's major libraries for rare books and manuscripts, with particular strengths in English literature and history (1641-1800), Oscar Wilde, and fine printing…The Clark Library’s collection of materials by and relating to Oscar Wilde and his circle is the most comprehensive in the world. The Clark also collects the work of Pierre Lou˙s, the dedicatee of Wilde’s play Salomé.”

The tour moves to UCLA's Special Collections where we will visit the Chicano Studies Research Center which was "established in 1969... The UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center Library was the first library in the United States to focus on the Mexican-descent population. Today, the CSRC Library is considered to hold among the most important national and international research collections in existence on the Chicana and Chicano experience. Of special note are holdings of monolingual and bilingual English and Spanish newspapers and journals published throughout the southwestern U.S. from the nineteenth century onward.

We will then visit the June Mazer Lesbian Archives, “the largest archive on the West Coast that pertains to lesbian and feminist history. The collection includes letters, artwork, journals, books, photographs, games and more, all preserving and promoting the culture.”

We will view pioneering American psychologist Evelyn Hooker's papers. Her 1957 research paper comparing the mental health of 30 male homosexuals to 30 male heterosexuals may be the most influential study in the history of social science.

Finally we will view the collection of novelist, poet, activist Paul Monette. The collection consists of correspondence, manuscripts, proofs, notes, screenplays, plays, daybooks, memorabilia, photographs, clippings, and printed material related to Monette's life and literary career. Also included in the collection are the papers of two of Monette's previous lovers, Roger Horwitz and Stephen Kolzak.

Fee: $110

Accessibility: Easy level of walking. Tour will include a lot of standing. Ramps and elevators are available throughout.
