Table of Contents, vol. 5:1 Articles: Sally Whitman Coleman, “Hans Memling’s Scenes from the Advent and Triumph of Christ and the Discourse of Revelation.” The article discusses an early panoramic landscape Simultanbild that has perplexed art historians for years. Matthijs Ilsink, Monica Marchesi, “A Needlework by Philips van den Bossche (fl.1604-1615).” Published here for the first time is the single needle work securely attributed to Rudolf II’s embroiderer, a “needle painting” that gives insight into Van den Bossche’s embroidered oeuvre. Elizabeth Sutton, “Possessing Brazil in Print, 1630-54.” The article analyzes the maps of Brazil published during the tenure of the Dutch Republic’s possession of the territory (1630–54), many of which share common features demonstrating how existing conventions were used by publishers to convey Dutch ownership. Meijer Jr., “The Amsterdam Civic Guard Portraits within and outside the New Rijksmuseum, Pt. I” G. Schaep, “The Paintings in the Three Civic Guard Halls in Amsterdam, Written by G. Schaep, 1653” Tom van der Molen has translated the first installments of a five-part article by D.C.Meijer, Jr. published in Oud Holland (1885-1889). This “critical” translation provides a record of late 19th-century ideas about civic guard portraits around the time of the opening of the new Rijksmuseum. JHNA is the electronic journal of Historians of Netherlandish Art. Founded in 2009, the journal publishes issues of peer-reviewed articles two times per year. These articles focus on art produced in the Netherlands (north and south) during the early modern period (c. 1400-c.1750), and in other countries as they relate to Netherlandish art. This includes studies of painting, sculpture, graphic arts, tapestry, architecture, and decoration, from the perspectives of art history, art conservation, museum studies, historiography, and collecting history.
