Greetings all,

It isn't just art books, although illustrations in art texts are essential.  Here's an example that caused me to grind my teeth:

In the book  Findings:  The Material Culture of Needlework and Sewing on page 3 one finds this message:

[To view this image, refer to the print version of this title.]

Fig. 1.1 Frontispiece for Easy Steps in Sewing for Big and Little Girls, published by Jane Eayre Fryer in 1913. The girl’s sewing tools have come to life to keep her company during what would otherwise be tedious hours in the sewing room as she is instructed in sewing and femininity by another animated friend, her little sewing bird. Isn't it maddening?  In this case, not buying the print version means not having the illustration.  Happily, I can skip of to the GT section and look at the print version, but it is hard to make the case for the usefulness of e-texts when they themselves refer you to print.

Subject: [ARLIS-L] e-books with missing or black-white vs original color illustrations

Dear ARLIS-L,

Our library recently adopted a "buy the ebook" default policy with some exception for art books.

Is there any feasible way for ARLIS or some other party to flag art e-books that are missing illustrations, substituting black and white illustrations for the original print color images, or providing only poor quality images?

Thanks,

Ruth Thomas, Mugar Library, Boston University
