Colleagues,

This is a report on the highlights of ALA's ALCTS/CaMMS Committee on Cataloging: Description and Access (CC:DA) during the Midwinter conference in Seattle, January 2013. The full agenda is available here: http://alcts.ala.org/ccdablog/?p=198. Please feel free to ask if you have any questions.

Highlights for me were the demonstration of RDA In Many Metadata Formats (RIMMF), the authorization to create two new Task Forces (on both of which I hope to include ARLIS/NA representation), and my report to CC:DA on the recent discussions of ARLIS/NA's CAC and friends about art cataloging issues raised by RDA (see email issued separately to ARLIS-L).

Also posted to Sherman Clarke’s artcataloging.net site here: http://artcataloging.net/ala/mw13/ccdalipcan.html. Sorry for cross-posting.

--Saturday, Jan. 26 session--

Highlights of the Report of the Library of Congress Liaison:
• A full document covering all LC activities is available on the “LC at ALA” website, http://www.loc.gov/ala/.
• LC published a high level model for the New Bibliographic Framework Initiative, “Bibliographic Framework as a Web of Data: Linked Data Model and Supporting Services” at: http://www.loc.gov/marc/transition/news/bibframe-112312.html in November of 2012.
• Historically, 2012 was the most productive year for romanization table development.

Report of the ALA representative to the JSC
• Work on RDA vocabularies is ongoing (this is preparatory metadata registry work for linked data purposes; I am assisting with art-related vocabularies).

Report of the Task Force (hereafter, TF) on Relationship Designators in RDA Appendix K [relationships between persons, families and corporate bodies.]
• The TF will continue its work and complete a proposal by Annual, if not before.
• Relationships for geographic names/places/jurisdictions will be fully addressed by a new TF on place names.

Discussion Paper from the TF on Instructions for Recording Relationships
• Addresses how relationships should be recorded in MARC, what relationships should be used for contents notes, and offers some options for reworking RDA chapters 25-28.
• This TF is scheduled to present a final proposal at Annual 2013, and the area of our greatest interest will be in Chapter 25, Related Works.

Report from the RDA Music Joint Working Group and how it affects CC:DA
• The JSC requested that an international music cataloging group be formed to address and formulate proposals, in an attempt to make sure that competing proposals are not issued by different constituencies. At the moment this group is North American, but adding EURIG representation is a possibility. Thus, music-related proposals would no longer be routed through ALA/CC:DA/MLA, they will be presented as "JSC Chair" documents; CC:DA is welcome to comment on them as always.

Report from ALA Publishing Services: Troy Linker
• RDA Toolkit improvements: new LCC-PCC-PS (hereafter, PS) indicated; beginning in April: RDA toolkit subscription will be required to use AACR2; links to other guidelines (AACR2, DACS, etc.) can be toggled on/off; TOC automatically syncs by default; workflows can be organized into global and local folders.
• Update release schedule: bimonthly on the even months, typically fast tracks, PS updates, JSC documents (all pending JSC approvals/activity)
• Editorial rewording in progress. A new print cumulation will be issued as soon as last chapter is reworded (expected mid-2013, depending on editorial process) with annual reissues to follow.
• Working on "Essential RDA" -- a distilled presentation of the basic instructions and core elements

--Monday, Jan. 28 session--

Report of the MARBI Liaison
• CC:DA will appoint a liaison to LC's MARC advisory committee, pending updates to CC:DA documentation.
• A new ALCTS group, the Metadata Standards Committee, has been formed and may want to have a liaison structure.

RDA In Many Metadata Formats (RIMMF; demonstration by Deborah Fritz)
• Free download: http://www.marcofquality.com/rimmf
• You must download client--you can run off a flash drive or install it. Not Mac compatible (unless you run it on the Windows side of a dual-boot computer).
• I VERY HIGHLY recommend that anyone interested in RDA cataloging go ahead and download/work with RIMMF to get used to how the instructions are applied.
• RIMMF is a prototype of input form for RDA--a visualization tool for catalogers, a cataloging training tool to help educators teach RDA--but not a cataloging tool that can be used in production.
• The tool guides catalogers through creating "records" for resources, creating and interlinking the appropriate WEMI elements and relationships as the data is entered. RIMMF menus and templates echo the RDA element and attribute set. The tool also allows the cataloger to view these "records" as expandable and collapsible WEMI "trees" or encoded in MARC.
• Highlights on entering data:
o no ISBD punctuation used
o templates can have fields pre-filled
o drop down menus can be reordered as necessary
o LC NAF can be searched and name records imported
o adding new terms to open vocabularies is possible on-the-fly
• Deborah also raised several issues in applying RDA which I expect CC:DA will address in one way or another.

Follow-up actions for ALA/CC:DA and New business
• Brief announcement on CAC's work towards revision proposal for instructions on related works in artist monographs, exhibition catalogs and the like.
• A proposal to clarify the instructions for numbering leaves and pages will be developed by RBMS.
• 2 new TFs authorized. I will consult with CAC to find and suggest an ARLIS/NA member to represent our interests on each:
o TF to develop a proposal to address place names
o TF to develop a proposal for adding Extent of Carrier/Content to RDA

The following reports were given also:
• Report of the chair: CC:DA worked and 45 proposals between Annual and Midwinter.
• Report of the TF to Investigate Changes Affecting RDA in the Chicago Manual of Style, 16th edition
• Report of the PCC Liaison
• Report of the CC:DA Webmaster
• Report from the RDA Conference Forums and Programs TF
• Report from the RDA Planning and Training TF

Best regards,
Dan
