The Morgan Library & Museum is pleased to announce the publication of
Degas, Miss La La, and the Cirque Fernando, by Linda Wolk-Simon, with
contributions by Nancy Ireson and Eveline Baseggio Omiccioli.

For several successive evenings in January 1875, Edgar Degas,
considered by his contemporaries to be the quintessential painter of
modern life, attended performances by the sensational mixed-race
aerialist known as Miss La La at the Cirque Fernando in Paris. Hoisted
only by a rope clenched between her teeth, Miss La La was suspended at a
great height in the upper reaches of the circus interior. Degas
obsessively recorded this stupendous feat in a series of drawings and
pastels culminating in Miss La La at the Cirque Fernando, his only
circus-themed painting, now in the National Gallery, London. Published
in conjunction with the exhibition Degas, Miss La La, and the Cirque
Fernando, this catalogue presents the artists entire body of work
relating to this celebrated composition, images by other artists
exploring similar subjects, and prints, photographs, and ephemera
chronicling Miss La La and her acclaimed appearances in London and
Paris. The lead essay, by Linda Wolk-Simon, organizer of the exhibition,
provides new and revealing insights about the enigmatic performer, her
troupe, and the now-destroyed Cirque Fernando. A second essay, by Nancy
Ireson, charts the extraordinary popularity of the circus as a form of
urban entertainment in late-nineteenth-century Paris and the many
artists who found inspiration in its colorful spectacle. A fully
illustrated catalogue concludes the volume.
