Hello all,

Here's a small point about RDA that I'm having trouble with.

The relator subfield e being attached to many headings under RDA cataloging is causing inconsistencies in my OPAC.  I intend to suppress their display (as WorldCat does) and have them ignored during sorting/indexing.  While this is technically possible, my system cannot easily remove the comma that is being stuck onto the end of the heading's subfield a.  It appears that WorldCat also cannot do this. If you look at one of the corporate authors for Matisse: in Search of True Painting, it's  Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York, N.Y.),  << note the comma tacked onto the end.

It bothers me that extraneous commas are being incorporated into the subfield a.  Anyone have any thoughts or ideas about this?

With regards,
Janice

Linda,

You are correct in saying that describing illustrative content is not a core element in RDA. There’s much more flexibility and choice offered in RDA—more “cataloger’s judgment”—and this means that libraries and library communities will have to make decisions about what’s important.

The ARLIS Cataloging Advisory Committee (and friends) are virtually meeting this Friday to discuss an important RDA development: access points for artist monographs. I’m hoping that CAC can at some point recommend some guidelines and/or best practices for cataloging art resources for ARLIS/NA to endorse, but it may take a little time for all of us to get on our feet and get coordinated.

For those of you with access to the RDA Toolkit, the core elements are listed in RDA 0.6. LC has published their list of core elements here: http://www.loc.gov/aba/rda/pdf/core_elements.pdf.

Best,

Dan
