Hi!
The University of Nebraska has had Scan Pros since the 1000 model came out, and recently purchased a 2000 (that will upgrade to the 3000). While we have a small microfilm collection, many of our faculty continue
to ILL and use the film (and fiche and microcard!) we have do have on hand, and most of those faculty are ‘old-skool’ and had to be dragged into using them, but eventually even they learned to love it. It’s a very convenient tool that’s brought a small resurgence
of interest in using microfilm. And let’s face it, Proquest’s Historical Newspapers did a dismal job of migrating the images in newspapers (not necessarily their fault).
The pricing differences can be accounted for the different lens-options and other bells and whistles. For us, the scan base cost nearly $7,000, the lens another $3,000, the motorized fiche carrier $2000, opaque
function $25000 and the OCR/Power Scan software $2400. If you have limited use of your microcard/fiche, you may consider not getting some of these items. Of course, all of this is BEFORE you buy a computer, decent monitor (we station them in portrait mode),
and adobe acrobat pro (to assemble your pdf files for you).
If you have any questions you’d like specifically answered, feel free to email me off-list.
Cheers from Nebraska!
Richard

Subject: [ARLIS-L] Microfilm Scanner
Hi all—I am in the market for a compact microfilm scanner and would like to find out what other libraries are using and hopefully get some feedback or recommendations. The one that seems to be best suited
for our needs is the ScanPro 2000, but I can’t get a true price estimate on it without contacting a dealer (it seems to range anywhere from $6000 to $10,000). Does anyone have this? If so, would you mind letting me know if you like it, would you recommend
it to others, and roughly how much it cost to purchase? If anyone uses and likes something similar, I’d love to hear about that as well.
Thank you!
Rachael
