The issue of E-Publications came up yesterday. A Ph.D. student wanted
me to have our main campus library acquire an E-Book that is available
through Amazon. I wasn't sure how to do this, so I asked my counterpart
selector about the procedure. This is her reply:

A couple of things about the book, you can refer regular e-book titles
to me, if they are a reasonable price. We put them in the system and
then they are available for everyone on all three campuses.

Having said that, the one you have below is for a Kindle ebook, which
are designed to be purchased and downloaded to one mobile device. We do
not have a mechanism for this type of purchase. We can’t buy something
to be only read by one person. There are licensing and technical issues
which may resolve at some time in the future, but there are barriers
now. I tried looking for this title in Coutts Oasis and in Worldcat to
see if there are other editions available, and it did not come up.

This is definitely problematic even for a University Library of our size
and stature.

Margaret English
