In her LIVE TRANSMISSION series of works in graphite on paper, Morgan O’Hara tracks the movement in real time of a subject/collaborator, compressing into a single image a record of prolonged activity. Her approach to drawing as a mode of performance situates her within the current discussion around drawing’s more unconventional manifestations. Artist and critic Stephen Maine joins O’Hara to discuss her exhibitions LIVE TRANSMISSION: New Yorkers Reading as part of Art in the Windows and Art Wall on Third exhibition series at Mid-Manhattan Library, and the uses to which drawing may be put as a form of research into the visible world, inquiry into the invisible, and communication between the two realms.
Morgan O'Hara was born in Los Angeles and has worked internationally as an artist since 1978. Fluent in English, French and Italian she participates in performance art festivals worldwide. Her LIVE TRANSMISSION performative drawings and large scale site-specific wall drawings have been exhibited on five continents. She teaches master classes in drawing and the psychology of creativity in the US, Europe and Asia. She is the recipient of several grants, including Gottlieb Foundation and Pollock-Krasner Foundation Fellowships. Her work is held in prominent public collections including the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, The Netherlands; The National Gallery, Washington, D.C.; and the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles. Her permanent site specific wall drawings can be found in the Macau Art Museum, China; the Canadian Academy Kobe, Japan and the Vrije Universiteit OZW, Amsterdam. She was raised in post-war Japan, lived in Europe for 25 years, and returned to live in New York in 2010. She currently works in her studio at the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts.
Stephen Maine is a painter, critic, curator and teacher. Honors include a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in Painting (2000) and a residency at Yaddo (2012). Represented by MINUS SPACE in Brooklyn, Maine is a member of American Abstract Artists and the International Association of Art Critics. Contributing Editor at artcritical.com and a regular contributor to Art in America and Artillery magazines, he has also written for artnet.com, Art on Paper, The New York Sun, The Brooklyn Rail, and artecontexto. Maine regularly reviews new and forthcoming books on contemporary art for artinamericamagazine.com. Recent curatorial projects includeThe Incipient Image at Lesley Heller Workspace and Wall Works at The Painting Center. Maine teaches in the graduate department of Fine Arts at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan.

understanding and appreciation of contemporary art. Artists are paired with
critics, curators, gallerists, writers or other artists to converse about art
and the potential of exploring new ideas.
