Dear ARLIS/NA
In addition to the Department of Visual Arts, Emory University will close the Division of Educational Studies, the Department of Physical Education, and the Journalism program. The
Institute of Liberal Arts (ILA) will be downsized, and the Economics and Spanish graduate programs will be suspended.
The Emory Art History Department and my job here in the library are not threatened, but it is a sad loss for the Emory Campus and the Atlanta Art Community.
Emory has had a visual arts/studio program for many years, falling under the larger art history department, but the formation of the
Visual Arts Department and it's wonderful
2006 building, with gallery space and start-of-the-art studio classrooms, is relatively new. Not only
did they teach outstanding students, but the Department and the Gallery gave Atlanta and the Emory community five to six contemporary art shows each year, and offered outstanding lectures, panels, and screenings by prominent artists, curators, critics and
scholars.
The future of the Visual Arts Building and the Visual Arts Gallery have not been decided.
Thanks for your concern,
