Scholars and collectors of American art history, material culture, design and book art might be interested in my newest exhibition catalog, The Book Cover Art of Thomas Watson Ball
               http://minsky.com/orderform-subscriptionTWB.htm

Better known for his later paintings, Ball was an art editor at Harper's 1894-1901, and also created some of their most innovative book covers. including abstract landscapes starting in 1897, and striking nautical imagery. As a freelancer he produced cover art for many other publishers, particularly Dodd, Mead. His work influenced a generation of artists.

Because Ball didn't monogram his covers he was unknown to the historians of the field for decades, until his portfolio surfaced at the University of Rochester. There is so much variety of style that it would have been a leap of imagination to assume all these unattributed works were by the same hand. The catalog text includes sections on the genres he worked in, with identifying points in both design and lettering styles, and excerpts from Ball's unpublished memoir.

If  American publishers' bindings interest you, the three volumes of American Decorated Publishers' Bindings 1872-1929, published from 2006 to 2010, document 1,100 prime examples by 141 identified artists. Many ARLIS libraries have it.  A list of institutional collections with these volumes is at
