The Executive Board of the Art Libraries Society of North America (ARLIS/NA) notes with sadness the passing of our colleague, friend, and benefactor Howard Karno, the founder of Howard Karno Books, Inc. Together with his wife and business partner Beverly Joy-Karno, Howard was instrumental in building collections of Latin American art books at many of our members' libraries. As longtime supporters and benefactors of ARLIS/NA, Howard and Beverly established a travel award given annually to encourage professional development of art librarians who work to advance the study of Latin American art through interaction with ARLIS/NA colleagues and conference participation.

Howard created an all-encompassing lifestyle that meshed his academic interests, astute business instincts, and passion for books and travel. He possessed a Ph.D. in Latin American History, yet wore his erudition lightly. For every informed and enlightened bibliographical description of a book he offered, there was an equally fascinating tale of adventure associated with its acquisition. And then there were the jokes, hugs, and restaurant reviews one could always expect at any encounter with Howard.

Howard's approach to life was infused with gusto, intellectual curiosity, and an infectious level of enthusiasm. With Howard gone, there won't be anyone quite like him in our midst again, but his exemplary career and warm humanity will continue to inspire us. We will dearly miss our esteemed colleague and extend our sympathies to Beverly, the extended Karno family and the staff of Karno Books.
