Considering attending the Summer Educational Institute for Visual
Resources and Image Management at University of Michigan-Ann Arbor? Then
check out what SEI instructor Greg Reser (University of California-San
Diego) has to say about his Embedded Metadata session, part of the
day-long metadata immersion being offered at SEI:

"Have ever searched for a song by title or sorted your albums by genre on
iTunes?  Then you are an embedded metadata user.  Would you like to find
all your images of roadside attractions scattered across a hundred folders
on your 3TB hard drive?  Then you need to be an embedded metadata user.  A
digital image without embedded metadata is like a 35mm slide without a
label or a print with no caption.  Image files, like audio files, can can
be encoded with metadata which travels wherever they do and enables
producers to track workflow, proclaim copyright, give instructions,
transfer information and allows users to find, organize, and identify the
images they receive.  While it won't solve all your problems as an image
producer or manager, embedded metadata can be very useful.

This session will explain how metadata, both technical and descriptive, is
encoded in images, what tools are used to read and write it, and what data
standards are used to assure interoperability across software and
services.  You will have the opportunity to work with software to read and
write image metadata.  You will finally understand what EXIF, IPTC and XMP
stand for.  You will learn not put Rembrandt in the "Creator" field.
Wait, what?  Really, it's true!  To find out why, register for SEI."
