Two weeks ago the New York Department of Records treated the world to over 870K images in their Municipal Archive Online Gallery. Most of the unique photographs, maps, motion picture and audio recordings in the collection were made accessible for the first time, and what a treat!

The gallery includes complete holdings or samples from 30 different historic collections which can be searched individually or all together in the LUNA software.

We were thrilled when the collection went live, and even more thrilled to watch the worldwide traffic increase daily. Not only did the NY Department of Records choose LUNA to display this marvelous collection, but we also host the collection.

The Village Voice blog did a great Q&A with Eileen Flannelly, Deputy Commissioner of the Department of Records. If you're overwhelmed by the idea of jumping into the collection itself start by reading the post to get some background on why they decided to make the collection public and to see some sample images.

Enjoy!
