The report profiles the efforts of universities, library
consortia and private firms to digitize books, periodicals, prints, music and
film and other library materials. The
organizations profiled include: the California Digital Library, the University
of Chicago’s Oriental Institute, the University of Michigan Digital Production
Service, the University of North Carolina’s Digital Southern Historical Collection,
Luna Imaging, Inc., Orbis Cascade Alliance, the University of Kentucky, Northern
Micrographics, and the University of Pittsburgh.
The report explores the tactics, strategies, costs and
development plans of these major players in library digitization efforts. Among the issues covered are: outsourcings
vs. in-house digitization, rights, marketing, budgeting, impact on the print
collection, equipment preferences, labor supply, partnerships and work
flow. The purpose of the report is to
help library digitizers answer fundamental questions related to the practical
nuts and bolts of digitization decision making. The report was written by
veteran former Business Week reporter Joan Oleck, author of numerous previous
Primary Research Group studies on digitization.
