Hi Sherman and Lily,

I would hate to see the CPDG group disband as well. It’s one of the things I look forward to the most at each ARLIS conference. I think it’s a great opportunity to meet with other catalogers face to face and issues come up during those meetings that might not be raised over a listserv.

I regret that I won’t be able to attend the CPDG meeting as it’s currently scheduled. I have to fly home Sunday night. If there is consensus about rescheduling the meeting, is there any chance of rescheduling it for Friday, Saturday or Sunday?

Lily, please keep me posted if you decide to have an off-program systems discussion. I would be interested in attending that as well.

Sherman, thank you for yet another great review of the year in art cataloging!!

Best,

Pauline

Hi Sherman,

I hate to see the CPDG group disband because I think it’s still valuable to have technical services folks in one space to talk about issues. As a newbie cataloger many moons ago, I also found this forum really great to ask those questions that I was a bit embarrassed to broadcast across the listserv, and I made many valuable professional connections at those meetings.

Having said that, I am also very interested in the Book Arts SIG and how we might collaborate with the Artist Book community to repurpose data to better streamline cataloging activities. I think this is a good opportunity for the cataloging group to be part of that discussion, so I do like the idea of invading. I’m clearly torn.

The schedule is pretty tight, but could we move the CDPG to Monday at 7am (groan) or 10am? I was thinking of trying to arrange an off-the-program systems discussion, too, so maybe we could bundle these together? That’s just an idea, but let’s see if there are others still interested in hanging onto the CPDG in another timeslot and possibly expanding it.

Thanks for bringing this up!

Lily

Subject: [ARLIS-L] CPDG: review of the year in art cataloging 2012

The Cataloging Problems Discussion Group is scheduled to meet in Toronto on Sunday evening at 6:30. This conflicts with the Book Arts SIG and several other special interest groups. The Book Arts SIG will be discussing "the artist book form that 23 Sandy Gallery is collecting to facilitate cataloging/discovery/info exchange about their book artists and their work." There is always conflict on the conference schedule but it is really too bad that we cannot share the discussion.

Years ago, before email lists and the internet, CPDG was a vital chance for catalogers to talk about specific issues that came up in applying the rules and procedures, putting scope on LCSH terminology, classification nuance, etc. etc. We can now ask these questions as they come up (or just accept the cataloging copy we find in OCLC). Please let me know if you think we should abandon a CPDG gathering in Toronto and invade the Book Arts SIG.

Meanwhile, I have prepared a review of the year in art cataloging 2012 and posted it at http://artcataloging.net/arlisna/cpdg2012.html -- let me know if you have any questions.
