Hello Josh,

Thank you for your feed back on the artist book fields. Everyone's comments have been so incredibly helpful. Seeing your catalog records was also great. There's another project for some day: making these fields sortable. Right now, we are using "tags" for the binding style and many of the other specifications, but sorting by these fields would be even better. I'll put it on the wish list.

In the meantime I've changed these two fields based on your input:

"Book Structure" is now "Book Structure/Binding Method"

"Reproduction Method" is now "Printing/Reproduction Method"

I love how this project is evolving. We are down to less than 50 books and 20 broadsides that still need to be added to our web store. Didn't quite make the March 1 deadline, but close.

Have a good day,

Laura

Subject: Re: artist book cataloging fields feedback request

I'm glad to see this discussion.

Here at UNC-Chapel Hill we've been working for a while on enhancing our catalog records for artists' books with more descriptive information.  After a lot of frustrating work with LC, AAT and other established cataloging thesauri, we finally settled on creating our own local thesaurus of terms as the most flexible, efficient approach.

We decided that the 2 most important areas we wanted to provide more info on (and which were the least well represented in other thesauri) could be represented in a "Binding method" field and a "Printing/production method" field.  We're going through our collection book-by-book and adding at least one entry for each of these headings - often more than one.  We do still add LC, AAT and other terms when we find ones that work.  It makes for some redundancy, but we don't mind in this case.

I'd be happy to share the local thesaurus we've developed so far with anyone who's interested.  Or you can see the catalog records we've done so far -- sorted by "Binding method" categories here<http://webcat.lib.unc.edu/search/a?searchtype=d&searcharg=binding+method&searchscope=1&submit=Search>;  or by "Printing/production method" categories here<http://webcat.lib.unc.edu/search/a?searchtype=d&searcharg=printing%2Fproduction+method&searchscope=1&submit=Search>.

Laura, the fields on your form look like they would serve our purposes well.  The descriptions on your website have already helped us a couple of times.  Thanks for recognizing the importance of good, descriptive terms that help us to make artists' books more accessible to patrons!

Take care -
Josh
