Some additional descriptions of books offered on ABE, E-Bay and elsewhere. Rejoinders in parentheses and in bold.

Ray Smith / R.W. Smith Bookseller, New Haven

1. Covers have small skinned spot and light wear. If held to the nose, it has a slight musty smell. At normal reading distance, it has no smell. (What about normal smelling distance?)

2. At first glance, one would grade the book and jacket at Near Fine, however silverfish have nibbled the top edges of the binding and a quarter inch down the rear cover. The DJ also received their attention which is not apparent on the front panel but can be noted on the top of the front flap and around the remainder of the top edges. I have rated the book and jacket as Good because of these pesky critters. (Finally those pesky critters get some credit for making a good book.)

3. Spine and corners bumped and rubbed, boards soiled with some biopredation, light foxing. (Biopredators simply have no respect.)

4. Former Library book. Intact & readable. This is a USED book. Please be advised that it is rated ACCEPTABLE due to likely defects such as highlighting. (Any other acceptable defects, such as biopredation?)

5. (Dante update: librarians): Perforated library stamp on title page. This perf stamp appears on each plate--a special place in Hell for the librarian who perforated these plates--this attack on the book is so uncalled for--these are not plates that anyone woud [sic] want to razor out and frame.

6. Leatherette cover is intact with no nicks or tears but has age discolouration, adds character, have dusted the book off but it has retained its musty smell. (That musty smell does indeed add character.)

7. Book Condition: G. First Edition. Top of spine area has tiny holes (puppy tooth marks?). (A forensic odontologist would know.)

8. Book Condition: New. Perfect gift! Micro shelfwear. (Microwaved books now the rage.)

9. 11. (Google translation from the French): in-8, cardboard editor Cloth green water, the first flat section past the tears caps, xxipp. and 124pp., beautiful laid paper, foxing on the guards and a few isolated pages, a few discharges of snakes, otherwise good condition inside. (What kind of discharge do snakes make? Are cardboard editors safe?)

12. Limited to 1600 Copies Only. Xviii + 535 pp., over 1,500 ills of which 60 are cold. (I'd prefer one of the hot ones.)

13. TEXT IN SWISS - BRIGHT RED LINEN CLOTH, WITH ILLUSTRATED DUST JACKET. (My favorite language.)

14. I would imagine this would be an excellent source book for any student of art history. The book is a good reading copy. Rubs and bumps at corners with wear at bottom corners and slight wear at top front corner, some mobility to spine, softness at spine ends with a couple of small splits to cloth at base of spine and some more general splitting and fraying at top of spine, 6cm split in cloth at top of front spine edge with some fraying and slight loss to cloth, 2.5cm split across spine from bottom of front spine cloth split, some darkening to spine especially at ends with some dark specks, edge rubs, slight fading at top front edge, some general dark blotches to front cover, several light marks and some general dark blotches to rear cover, grubbiness to page edges, roughness and uneveness to top page edges, a little uneveness to front and bottom page edges, a little webbing exposure between front board and fep, light grubbiness and some light marks to endpapers and pastedowns, small binders label at bottom of rear pastedown, tiny split in spine paper at bottom of spine between rear board and endpaper, crease at bottom corner of fep, light brown speckling to prelims and index pages, there are some light brown marks to pages throughout - some pages have no marks, others have quite a few marks, a little extra paper at front edge of a few pages with a few small splits, book has a slightly old smell if you put your nose right up to it. Far from perfect but still an interesting and useful book with plenty of wear left. (The selling point: indispensable for the art historian, so hold your nose.)

15. (Book description found on ABE): VERY GOOD. FIRST EDITION. 0894790234 ". these women are possessions. They are the beautiful, expensive objects that furnish the rich man's life and amuse him during the long hours of his leisure. They are passing shadows, never meaning too much or staying too long in on man's life: wjem tjeor neaitu jas ceased to please they are replaced by other jewelled butterflies." This is a very good first edition book. (As for those jewelled butterflies, wjem tjeor neaitu jas?)

16. Book is in very good shape, but was considerably underlined in light pencil. It might be possible to read it without noticing any underling now, but you would eventually be aware it had been done. (You might watch your back for the underling, he's not always in front of you.)

17. A BEAUTIFUL VOLUME THAT WOULD LOOK GREAT IN THE BOOKCASE BUT ESPECIALLY NICE LAYING FLAT. (I'd probably have to stretch my neck a bit, but I'll try it.)
