Introducing The Art Detectives

Art historian Patricia Moss met Nicole Semenchuk when Moss reported locations of “lost” portraits to the Smithsonian’s American Art Museum’s Research and Scholars Center where Semenchuk was responsible for the Inventory of American Paintings. Semenchuk became curious and asked more about the work of an art detective and eventually wrote an article on Moss, aka “The Bingham Lady,” for the Center’s newsletter.

The two remained in contact and found they shared the same commitment to integrity, excellence and professionalism.  Moss continued to locate 19th century American portraits, correctly identify artists of misattributed works, and develop a system of authentication based on dating, connoisseurship, and when necessary, scientific examination. In the meantime, Semenchuk was answering countless questions on hundreds of artists for scholars and researchers, all the while developing a breadth and depth of knowledge of 19th century American art.

In 2011, after 11 years at the Smithsonian, Semenchuk left to pursue her quest for personal excellence.  Propelled by their shared commitment and vision, Moss and Semenchuk joined forces to become an unbeatable pair of art detectives who help people learn about their paintings.

Serving as general consultant is Dr. Jeffrey Weidman; as consultant for portrait artists, Dr. Maryellen McVicker; for landscape identification, botanist and environmental historian Kathleen Sayce; and for genealogical research, Sylvia Greer.  Helping to keep the group organized is Rosemary Hallin, the art sleuths’ Watson.
