Thomas Watson Ball (1863-1934) was relatively unknown until
recently, but is emerging from obscurity as not only one of the
major book cover designers at the turn of the 20th century, but a
significant art director, type designer (the familiar Colgate font
that was used on their products for many decades), muralist, and
marine painter of the American Impressionist school.
This exhibition catalog reproduces in color more than 70 cover
designs attributable to Ball, and raises many questions about
previously unattributed works that, due to the wide variety of his
graphic and lettering styles, will provide researchers with a lot of
work for decades to come. This exhibition is not intended to be
definitive, but provides scholars, curators and collectors with
enough visual reference material that they may find many previously
unattributed TWB book covers in their collections.
