Hi,

We have never had Artstor and haven't had requests for it. Online resources
by themselves are not adequate, though. Faculty take their own photographs
and do their own scanning. For higher volume, please don't forget local
image databases, preferably managed by a librarian or someone who has
achieved comparable knowledge through apprenticeship, and paid as a
librarian. We can handle a much higher volume than faculty have time for
and can save a lot of redundant work by creating a common pool of images.
It does not have to be someone's full-time responsibility, but well
equipped libraries generally have the digitization resources and other
expertise required for the work.

So this is really and answer to the question, can Goolge replace visual
resources production? It can't.

Thanks,
Steve Tatum

  Good afternoon,

Are any academic libraries finding that the web is more than adequate for
their digital image needs, so that they are no longer able to justify the
considerable expense of Art STOR, or have your users become dependent on
ArtSTOR?
