Dear Judy and Steve,
I concur with Steve. Steve points out the range of choices from Epson; I can also recommend Canon. I have a Canon 8400f flatbed at home for which I paid US$130 several years ago. It can handle four 35mm slides, or one strip of negatives, at a time, with excellent preview results.

I will also be interested in others' approaches to the question Judy raises.

Judy,

The negative preview on a scanner will show a positive proof of black and white or color negatives. A flatbed scanner that handles transparencies would be the most efficient for bulk viewing of 35 mm negatives and probably the only economical choice for larger ones. Epson offers good flatbed photo scanners in a range of prices.

Alternatively, lay the negatives on a light table, photograph them with a digital camera, then reverse the values in imaging software.

Dear ARLIS members

I am investigating options for equipment that will allow us to view
negatives as positives and would appreciate any comments on possible
options from other ARLIS libraries.

Thanks
