Book as Witness: The Artist's Response, Curated by Maria G Pisano will be at The Center for Book Arts, NYC - July 11- September 15, 2012.

The exhibit is available for travel if any of you are interested in hosting it. The exhibit has approximately 30 works, including artists' books, graphic novels and broadsides. The list of works is available upon request.

Statement:
Book artists are continuing the tradition of books as keepers of our collective memory. They use the book format, in its myriad transformative powers, to express their interpretive and personal memory stories. The exhibit will present works by artists who use the book form to create pieces that deal with themes of war, global conflicts, naturals disasters, the holocaust and individual losses. These books are powerful mementos, and even as they focus on death and destruction, they commemorate the resilience of the human spirit.

The book in its traditional form is a familiar and comfortable object. Book artists have stretched the boundaries of what a book is, bringing forth works that reflect and respond to the theme through the design not only of the text and image, but also in the concept of structure. The artist is present, giving their vision a physical reality and challenging the viewer to a different dimension. The books speak of time, memory and history. As memories accumulate they are selected, organized and stored within; accessing these visual echoes and finding these markers, they surface as art objects.
