The Texas-Mexico Chapter announces Mark Pompelia, Visual and Material Resources Librarian, Fleet Library at Rhode Island School of Design, as the recipient of the 2012 Lois Swan Jones Professional Development Award. The $500 award will help defray travel and registration expenses related to his attending the 40th ARLIS/NA annual conference in Toronto, March 29-April 2, 2012. Mark will be participating at the conference as a speaker on social media at the VRA Canada meeting being held concurrently with the first day of the ARLIS/NA conference; as chair of the Materials Special Interest Group and organizer of a related tour of Studio HoK; as a presenter of his paper "Texture and Materiality: Creating a New Material Resource Center at RISD" at the session Marketing Librarians: Practice and Spaces in the 21st Century; and as a panelist to discuss further collaboration between ARLIS/NA and VRA at the Visual Resources Division meeting. Mark will be writing about his conference experience in the issue of The Medium that follows the conference.

The award, named in 1992 to honor Lois Swan Jones, Professor Emerita of art history at the University of North Texas and charter member of the Texas Chapter, supports and encourages the participation of an ARLIS/Texas-Mexico Chapter member at the ARLIS/NA annual conference by helping to defray conference expenses. Professor Jones was the author of several standard works on art information research methods and a recipient of the 1996 ARLIS/NA Distinguished Service Award. The combination of her enthusiasm, commitment to education, and love for art history serves as a model for art information professionals.

Coincidentally, the chapter recently digitized and loaded the 1992 issue of The Medium that announced Professor Jones’ retirement on its website:
