This is an interesting discussion. I've never thought about the need for
a collection of blank models but see how it could be useful in some
situations. The professor at our institution who teaches most of the
classes on artists' books has her own 'teaching collection' that she
uses with her students. When she brings her classes to the library she
is especially interested in exposing students to the unity of structure
and content (images, text, etc.) in successful artists' books. If we had
a collection of blank structure models, it would be nice if they were
reasonably priced so that we'd feel comfortable having students check
them out of the library for examination at home or in the studio. With
that in mind, exquisite handmade papers and other high-end materials
would be of lesser importance for our needs.

Hello Rachel and folks,

I am a book artist, I make my living by selling edition and unique
artist books. Rachel, your request is timely because for some time now I
have been thinking of making a series of books with no content, blank
books, as a resource for teachers and students to explore different
structures and perhaps simply expand their ideas about what is a
book. The series (as a set) would not be editioned, and would use some
interesting and colorful papers to perhaps expand students experience of
papers. The cost would be less than edition books with content, but
they would still be all hand crafted. I thought this might be a good
idea, but was hesitant because I didn't know if there was a need or
demand for such books.

What do the rest of you think?

Thank you,

Jill Timm
